Altar welcomes perspectives from within and beyond the traditional wedding industry. Contributors do not need previous bridal experience.

For this issue, Altar is unlikely to accept:

• Generic wedding advice

• Listicles

• Conventional trend roundups without a larger argument

• Promotional brand profiles or product placement presented as editorial

• Vendor education written primarily to market a service

• Conventional real weddings without an unusual artistic, cultural, historical, or emotional perspective

• Work that reproduces familiar bridal narratives without complicating them

• Undisclosed sponsored or client-directed material

• Generative AI-produced writing, photography, or artwork

Please tell us what your piece will argue, reveal, investigate, complicate, or make newly visible.

Essays, Criticism, Features, Profiles and Interviews

Pitches are preferred for long-form written work. Completed drafts will also be considered, but acceptance may require editing.

Please submit:

• A proposed title

• A pitch of approximately 150–300 words

• The central argument, question, or narrative

• An explanation of how the work connects to Portals

• The proposed format and estimated word count

• Relevant sources or proposed interview subjects, if applicable

• Relevant writing samples

• A short contributor biography

• Confirmation of whether the pitch is being submitted exclusively to Altar

Suggested Lengths

• Short reflection or dispatch: 400–700 words

• Cultural essay or criticism: 1,000–1,800 words

• Reported feature: 1,500–2,500 words

• Profile or interview: 1,200–2,200 words

• One-question contribution: 150–300 words

• Poetry: 1–3 poems, not exceeding five pages

• Experimental or hybrid work: Propose the length appropriate to the project

These ranges are guidelines rather than quotas. Altar may commission a different length during the editorial process.

We are not currently considering unsolicited written pieces exceeding 2,500 words.

Photography, Fashion Editorials, Illustration and Visual Research

Completed visual projects are strongly preferred, but not required.

Proposals for work that has not yet been produced will be considered only when the concept, creative team, production plan, and completion timeline are substantially developed.

For completed visual work, please submit:

• A project title

• A project statement of approximately 150–300 words

• A private link containing 10–20 low-resolution selects

• Complete preliminary creative credits

• Designer and garment information, where applicable

• The project’s publication history

• Confirmation that all contributing creatives have authorized the submission

• Confirmation that the work is available for print, digital, archival, social, and promotional publication

• Information about applicable model or property releases

• A portfolio link

• Details about any accompanying text

For unproduced proposals, please include:

• A concept treatment or mood board

• The confirmed or proposed creative team

• Production location

• Estimated completion date

• Relevant portfolio work from the photographer, stylist, and other principal creatives

• Resources already secured

Altar cannot guarantee funding, sample access, travel support, or production reimbursement for speculative projects.

For initial consideration:

• Submit JPEG or PNG review files

• Use the sRGB color profile where possible

• Images should be approximately 2,000 pixels on the longest edge

• Do not place watermarks across images

• Number files clearly and sequentially

• Submit a private, viewable gallery or folder link rather than large email attachments

Recommended filename format:

LASTNAME_PROJECTTITLE_01.jpg

If accepted, final files should meet the following requirements:

• Minimum 300 DPI at intended print size

• Ideally 4,000 pixels or more on the longest edge

• TIFF or maximum-quality JPEG

• Original working color profile, Adobe RGB, or sRGB

• No social-media screenshots or downloaded, compressed files

• Separate caption and credit sheet

• Complete creative, designer, garment, model, hair, makeup, and location credits

Submission does not guarantee that every accepted image will appear in print. Final selection, sequencing, cropping, and placement remain at Altar’s editorial discretion, in consultation with contributors where appropriate.

Altar is an independently funded publication with a limited commissioning budget. At this time, we are not offering honorariums for submitted materials.

Accepted visual contributors will receive:

• Full print and digital credit

• A contributor copy of Portals

• Portfolio links where possible

• Coordinated editorial and social promotion

Commissioned production is subject to compensation consideration, and any support must be agreed in writing before production begins.

Contributors retain copyright in their original work.

Upon acceptance, the contributor grants Altar first worldwide English-language rights to publish the accepted work in print and digital editions of Portals, along with non-exclusive, perpetual archival rights.

Altar may use reasonable excerpts, images, contributor names, project titles, and credited materials to promote the issue through its website, newsletters, social channels, press materials, retailer materials, events, advertisements for the publication, and related launch activity.

Accepted work must remain exclusive to Altar until 90 days after the issue’s publication unless otherwise agreed in writing. After that period, contributors may republish the work with acknowledgment that it first appeared in Altar.

Previously published work and simultaneous submissions must be disclosed at the time of submission.

Altar may edit written work for clarity, length, accuracy, house style, and legal or ethical concerns. Material changes affecting the meaning of a piece will be discussed with the contributor.

Altar may crop, resize, sequence, color-correct, and design visual work for print, digital, and promotional publication while preserving appropriate credit and the integrity of the project.

Acceptance is not final until the contributor and Altar have completed a written contributor agreement.

Altar welcomes submissions from emerging and established:

Submissions are open worldwide to contributors aged 18 or older.

Previous publication experience is not required. Contributors do not need to work within the bridal or wedding industry.

English-language submissions are preferred for this issue. Translated or multilingual work may be considered when translation is part of the proposal.

All submitted work must be original. Plagiarized, improperly attributed, or rights-infringing work will not be considered.

Generative AI-produced writing, photography, illustration, or artwork is not eligible unless disclosed as part of the work’s creative concept. Accessibility tools and conventional spelling, grammar, transcription, and editing tools are permitted. Any material use of generative technology must be disclosed.

Vendors, brand representatives, and people with commercial relationships to a proposed subject may submit, but all relevant affiliations must be disclosed.

Some work may be held for consideration in a future issue or digital feature. Altar will not publish or retain rights to work without the contributor’s written agreement.
