About

Weddings are among the last rituals we still participate in. They gather families, preserve traditions, reshape identities, and reveal what a culture values in a given moment. Weddings are intersections of fashion, design, commerce, history, performance, aspiration, and intimacy. Few occasions ask us to consider so many questions at once.

Yet they’re often discussed only through the language of consumption.

What should I buy?
What's trending?
Where should I spend?

These are worthwhile questions. They’re simply not the only ones. Altar exists to ask different questions.

Through essays, original reporting, interviews, criticism, editorials, and research, we explore what modern ceremony reveals about who we are, how we see ourselves, and the stories we choose to tell about love, identity, belonging, beauty, and permanence.

We believe fashion deserves context. We believe ceremony deserves criticism. We believe weddings are worthy of serious cultural conversation.

Bridal isn’t our lens because it’s niche. It’s our lens because it’s universal. It’s one of the clearest places to observe the ways culture is constantly being negotiated—between tradition and individuality, fantasy and reality, inheritance and reinvention.

Altar is an independent publication for readers who are interested not only in what is happening, but in what it means.

Our Approach

We publish work that favors curiosity over certainty.

That values observation over outrage.

That asks better questions before rushing toward conclusions.

Our pages bring together writers, photographers, designers, artists, historians, researchers, and industry voices who believe that fashion is more than clothing, that ritual is more than tradition, and that beautiful things become even more meaningful when we understand the ideas behind them. Whether we are analyzing a runway collection, interviewing a designer, examining consumer behavior, or documenting a wedding, our goal remains the same:

To create deeper context.

Long-form ideas. Lasting conversations.

Founder

Altar was founded by Chelsea Jackson, a writer, researcher, and creative director whose work sits at the intersection of fashion, consumer behavior, and contemporary ceremony.

After over a decade working inside the bridal industry, she became increasingly interested not only in how weddings are designed, but in what they reveal about culture itself. That perspective now shapes Altar's editorial direction, combining reporting, criticism, and visual storytelling to examine the evolving role of ceremony in modern life.
